Plumbing and Repairs

An earthquake can cause your nerves to become a bit shaky.  Additionally, damage to your sewer and waterlines, both inside and outside your home, can occur. The shifting ground can cause cracks in pipes and loosen joints, allowing for water or sewage to seep into your yard and home. Most of these issues can be resolved with plumbing repairs.

What You Can Do Once Your Nerves and The Ground Stabilize

The sooner you identify problems (once you determine that everyone is safe, that is), the less damage they will cause. In the first few days after an earthquake, you should:

  • Look for damp spots along the sewer line route. Also use your nose to detect foul odors. Either of these issues can signal septic or sewer line damage. Contact an emergency plumber to assess the situation.  Bad odors can also attract rats and other pests to your yard so nipping this in the bud is the safest.
  • Check the exterior of your home for puddles or sudden growth in grass or other plants. Both signs point to a water leak, and you will need to contact a plumber for repairs.
  • Be alert for damp spots on walls, puddles, dripping sounds and fluctuating water pressure. Any of these signs might indicate a broken or leaking water pipe in your home. Leaks can lead to the growth of mold and mildew, and they should be addressed immediately.
  • Check your water meter for sudden spikes in usage, which can indicate an undetected water leak.

Earthquakes Aren’t Predictable But You Can Be Prepared

You can install an Earthquake or Excess-flow Valve in your home that will automatically shut off your gas service when it detects seismic activity. While this technology only addresses gas flow to the home, if it activates, you should also investigate whether you have water or sewer issues as well.
