Considerations for a Killer Bathroom
- Create a reasonable budget. The budget should include labor costs and parts as well as wiggle room for if/when things go off plan. The biggest budgeting mistakes homeowners make are:
- underestimating labor costs
- not planning for the unexpected
- making other key activities (e.g. marketing your home) dependent upon an unrealistic timeframe for completing the project
- Hide the toilet. Use a room within a room or a half-wall to create a discrete area for this vital bathroom fixture.
- Select the right surfaces. Carpeting and porous tiles are not good choices for this room. Porcelain tile, enamel on steel or stainless steel sinks, and granite or quartz countertops are durable, beautiful, and timeless options.
- Take the plunge with the shower. This is a great area for “splurging,” since few people take baths but everyone uses the shower. Take out the tub (as long as there is another in the house), and create a large, luxurious open shower area.

- Don’t forget storage. Save space, for instance, by opting for one sink and more counter space rather than using a two sink model. Make sure you have room to store towels, toilet paper, and other necessities that you don’t want in plain view.
- Let there be light – and air. Keep mold and mildew growth to a minimum with proper ventilation, and add lighting appropriate to your needs. Overhead lights in the shower and toilet areas are fine, but put vanity lights on separate switches.
