The Movies

Plumbing problems, from leaking faucets to overflowing bathtubs, are often good for a laugh. Not surprisingly, most movies that portray plumbers are comedies.

• A Plumbing We Will Go (1940) starred Curly of The Three Stooges. He attempted to fix leaking pipes, and you can probably guess how often things went smoothly for him.
• Mario Brothers (1993) was a movie based on the video game about the adventures of plucky plumbing brothers Mario and Luigi. Bob Hoskins was cast in the title role.
• The Passionate Plumber (1932) starred Buster Keaton. He had more luck with the ladies than with the plumbing.
• The Seven Year Itch (1955) had a memorable scene with Marilyn Monroe sitting in a tub with her toe stuck in the faucet while a plumber worked to set her free.
• Plumbers Pipe Dreams (1960) featured the classic cartoon character Popeye. The plot involved him trying to win Olive’s heart by fixing her plumbing.

This list is far from complete. Over the years, plumbers have made many appearances in TV shows and movies, ranging from fixing a faucet to conducting a basic leak detection.

A surprising number of actors and entertainers were plumbers or plumber assistants before becoming famous. These include:

• Michael Caine – Actor
• Bob Hoskins – Actor
• Gabriel Byrne – Actor
• Joe Cocker – Singer
• Ozzy Osbourne – Singer
• Michael Flatley – Irish Dancer

Also, Albert Einstein wasn’t a plumber, but he expressed a desire to become one.
